The deep blue hue of lapis lazuli has been prized since ancient times. It was used to make ornaments and amulets, and even crushed to make the pigment ultramarine. The Girl with a Pearl Earring would not look as special without this striking colour. And if you look at the famous death mask of the ancient Egyptian King Tutankhamun, you’ll see bold stripes of blue – blue lapis lazuli.
The stone, with its deep celestial blue and glittering gold flecks, is often said to resemble the night sky, scattered with bright stars. This woven bracelet tries for another nature imagery, namely, the rough sea and its choppy waves. The stone is left unpolished and shaped into a cube, quite different from the conventional round and smooth beads. Because they are made from natural stone, each bead is unique, with its own hue and marbling.
The flow of blue is broken up by silver-tone surgical-grade stainless steel beads, hammered for a rough texture, bringing brilliant white sea foam to mind.
The strong black nylon fastens with a braided lock engraved with the Arkai logo. The lock is easy to adjust for sizing – simply place one end to the base of your palm and hold it with your middle finger. With your free hand, pull the other end as tight as you want it.
